Division III Hockey Semi-Finals

Vikings sail past Townies and into finals
Rogers High School eliminated East Providence from the Division III playoffs with a solid 5-1 win Saturday night at Lynch Arena.  The Vikings, who were 17-1 during the regular season, jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.  East Providence's lone goal, off the stick of senior co-captain Scott Lincoln, cut the deficit to 3-1 but Rogers answered two minutes later to seal the Townies' fate.  East Providence finishes the 2009-10 campaign with a 15-9-1-1 overall record.  Eric Allienello, Trevor Medeiros, Mitch Palumbo, and Scott Lincoln were named to the "All-Division" team by the Rhode Island Hockey Coaches Association.

Division III Hockey Semi-Finals
Rogers 2  East Providence 1
Vikings top Townies to take series lead
The Townies fell victim to the Rogers Vikings for the third time (all decided by a goal) this season as they were defeated 2-1 on Friday night at Portsmouth Abbey.  Goaltending dominated the night as the Vikings' Redmond Brow and the Townies' Eric Allienello were both superb in turning back 28 and 30 shots respectively.  East Providence's only goal came from junior left wing James Hall, and it tied the game at one mid way through the second period.  Despite numerous chances, including two break-aways, the Townies could not net the equalizer against the steady Brow.  The two teams will face off Saturday night in game two of the best of three series at 9pm at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.

East Providence 7  PCD 6
TOWNIES ADVANCE TO D-III FROZEN FOUR
Paul Lukas and James Hall both scored twice and Trevor Medeiros, Mitch Palumbo, and Alec D'Amico each chipped in with one as East Providence built up a 7-3 third period lead and then hung on for dear life.  The Knights out shot the Townies 42-27 but Townie net minder Eric Allienello came up big time and time again turning back 36 shots including two break away saves. The Townies will face off against either Mount Hope or Rogers in the semi-final series beginning Friday night.

Townies and Knights face off Monday night to determine who moves on in D-III playoffs
After splitting the first two games of their series East Providence and PCD will play a "win or go home" game on Monday night at Thayer Arena in Warwick.  On Friday the Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on as Trevor Medeiros, Paul Lukas, and Josh Rocha all scored third period goals for the Townies.  On Saturday, Paul Lukas, Mitch Palumbo, D.J. Donahue, and Ryan Barry all scored and goal tender Eric Allienello was outstanding as the Townies evened the series with a 4-2 win at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.

Rogers 3 East Providence 2
Vikings conquer Townies again
The Vikings scored a power play goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat East Providence on Saturday night at West Warwick and remain unbeaten in Division III competition.  The Townies fell behind 2-0 but knotted the score at two half way through the second period on a Mitch Palumbo slap shot that deflected its way past Viking goal tender Redmond Brow.  James Hall tied the score at one earlier in the period with a penalty shot goal that beat Brow on the glove side.  As was the case during the two teams' first meeting of the season, the Townies held territorial advantage for most of the night but could not break through against the Viking's net minder. Freshman Eric Allienello matched Brow shot for shot as he turned back 27 and turned in another solid performance.

WIZARDS SHOCK TOWNIES
Despite a 2-1 shot advantage and multiple scoring opportunities, East Providence could not find the back of the net and suffered its worse loss of the season to last place West Warwick on Saturday night at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.  The Townies played a flat first period and could not capitalize on a number of scoring chances in the second and third periods. The Townies' scoring drought stands at 72 minutes and they fall into a first place tie in Division III North.

1/17/10
Rogers 2  East Providence 0
Vikings remain unbeaten as Townie win streak is halted at six
With eighteen seconds remaining in regulation it appeared as though East Providence had tied the game at one on a Mitch Palumbo slap shot from the blue line.  However, appearances can be deceiving and the referee waived off the goal as a result of a Townie player being in the crease.  Replays showed no Townie within the crease area and six seconds later Rogers put the icing on the cake with an empty netter and defeated East Providence 2-0 at St. George's School on Sunday night.  The Townies carried the play for most of the night against the 8-0 Vikings but they could not break through against Rogers' goaltender Redmond Brow who turned back 24 Townie shots.

1/16/10

Donahue, and Josh Rocha continued their stellar two way play.

East Providence 7 South Kingstown 2
MEDEIROS LEADS TOWNIES PAST REBELS

HALL AND ALLIENELLO LEAD TOWNIES PAST VILLANOVANS
James Hall scored twice and freshman goaltender Eric Allienello was solid between the pipes as the Townies earned a much needed win on Friday night against Woonsocket at Mount Saint Charles.  Hall's first goal was courtesy of a beautiful power play set up by Mitch Palumbo and Trevor Medeiros and his second was a great individual effort.  Scott Lincoln accounted for the other Townie goal and Allienello made several key saves en route to his first varsity win.  Josh Rocha and D.J. Donahue were outstanding on the penalty kill and Paul Lukas and Harrison Jones were solid on the blue line for the Townies.

2009-2010 SEASON PREVIEW

The Townies will try and build upon last season's 9-8-1 campaign and they are poised to do so with a nice combination of seasoned veterans and some high impact newcomers.

Senior co-captain Scott Lincoln leads a talented group of forwards that includes nifty junior right wing James Hall and junior grinder D.J. Donahue, as well as talented LaSalle Academy transfer Trevor Medeiros (junior) and slick sophomore left wing Ryan Barry.  Junior center Peter Saunders is counted upon to have a breakout year and freshman center Kevin Hall should provide some speed and depth up front. Kyle Walmsley continues to improve and should log some key minutes on a checking line that will include experienced juniors Josh Rocha, Nick Costello, and Dylan Fortin.  Rocha could provide some depth on the blue line as well and give the Townies a versatile swing man with size. Senior Neil Bothelo will try to crack the lineup after an injury riddled junior season and juniors Matt Moss and Alec D'Amico, as well as sophomore Keith Marquis, will provide the Townies with depth they have not had since the championship season of 2005.

Senior co-captain Mitch Palumbo anchors a defensive corps that should not only provide solid defensive zone protection, but make a major contribution to the Townie offense.  Palumbo is joined on the blue line by freshman Paul Lukas who will make an immediate impact on the Townie lineup by providing solid puck control skills and a quarterback-like mentality on the blue line.  Senior defenseman Rodger Lincoln provides the Townies with a gritty, heads-up style and junior Harrison Jones is a quality skater and passer who is expected to have a standout season. Physical sophomore Matt Hall and talented freshman Matt Taylor will provide blue line depth for the Townies.

There will be good competition in goal this season with seniors Emily Klucznik and Shane Labao competing with junior John Andrews and freshman Eric Allienello. Klucznik enters the year with the most experience and she remains a very good one on one goaltender.  Labao has improved drastically after an erratic junior season and Andrews showed some positive signs when he got his chances last year.  Allienello possesses the most athleticism of the bunch and will push the upper classmen for playing time.

Barring injury the Townies should enjoy a winning winter and a playoff appearance.
