2008 SEASON

UPDATED STANDINGS

DIRECTIONS TO SCHOOLS

>NOV.26, 2008--  TOWNIES EARN POST SEASON AWARDS.  Six Townie players earned post season recognition for All-State and All-Division Awards.  Jessica Amaral was selected by the Coaches Association to the Second Team All State (Libero).  Jessica also earned First Team All Division.  Stephanie Michalopoulos was Third Team All-State, and First Team All Division.  Morganne Booker was selected Second Team All-Division.  Seniors Lauren Ghazal, Liz Caruolo and Michelle Fleming were Third Team All Division.  Congrats to the ladies for their accomplishments.

>NOV.18, 2008--  TOWNIES ARE BATTERED BY THE RAMS, LOSE IN THE SEMIFINALS, 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 25-27).   EP just didn't have it.  The team had continual lapses of poor play with numerous serving errors (11 for the match) and too many hitting errors (19 kills on 101 attacks, 13 errors).  This certainly wasn't the way the team wanted the season to end.  This marks the end of a great run by Townie seniors, Lauren Ghazal, Liz Caruolo, Karissa Goad, Shawna Spivey, Torii Costa, Michelle Fleming and Stephanie Michalopoulos.  Thank you for your dedication and effort.

>NOV.14, 2008--  EP OVERCOMES NORTH KINGSTOWN'S FAST START, AND DOWN THE SKIPPERS 3-1 (9-25, 25-19. 25-21, 25-23) ADVANCE TO THE SEMIFINALS.  It's a good thing you need to win 3 games to win a match, because the Skippers came out on fire.  The Townies couldn't do anything right in game 1.  The team had 9 hitting errors and 5 service errors in helping NK take game one.  The team showed toughness and fight to jump out quickly in game 2.  Games 3 and 4 were very tight, but the Townies managed to earn the key points at the right time.  It was a total team effort as every player had a hand in this win.  EP will now move on to the State Semi-Finals on Tuesday night at URI/Keaney Gym.  The Townies will face rival LaSalle Academy at 5:00 in the first semi-final of the night.

>NOV.11, 2008--  TOWNIES OVERCOME SLOW START TO BEAT EAST GREENWICH 3-0, (25-19, 25-15, 25-9), AND ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS ON FRIDAY.  The team showed some playoff jitters early in game one and it took a while for the team to get into sync.  Amanda Cabral had a game high 9 kills, and senior setters Lauren Ghazal and Michelle Fleming combined for 21 assists. EP will now face rival North Kingstown on Friday evening at 6:30 in the Quarterfinals.  The winner will advance to the Semifinals on Tuesday evening at the University of Rhode Island.

>NOV. 8, 2008--  TOWNIE JV TEAM FALTERS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.  Sometimes its just not meant to be.  The JV team pulled into North Kingstown on Saturday morning ready to go on their way to the championship.  Unfortunately the team played inconsistent, shaky volleyball enroute to losing to NK in the quarterfinals.  Overall the team had a great season going 16-1, and showed tremendous improvement from August until the end of the season.  Nice job ladies!!

>NOV. 7, 2008--  TOWNIES PLAYOFF SCHEDULE IS SET.  EP will play East Greenwich at home on Wednesday evening at 6:30, in the First Round of the State Championships.  The Townies defeated the Avengers in the second match of the season.  If the Townies win, they will play at rival North Kingstown on Friday evening at 6:30 in the Quarter Final Round.  EP beat NK in the opening match of the regular season.

>NOV. 5, 2008--  TOWNIE SENIORS SEND THE TEAM OFF TO THE PLAYOFFS WITH A WIN OVER LINCOLN 3-0, (25-8. 25-19. 25-16).  With seven seniors playing their last regular season home game, the team came out with great energy and took it to the Lions.  Seniors Liz Caruolo, Lauren Ghazal, Shawna Spivey, Michelle Fleming, Stephanie Michalopolous, Torii Costa and Karissa Goad have dedicated a lot of time and effort to this program and deserved their recognition tonight.  EP will now move on to the opening round of the playoffs which will be on Wednesday night at home against an opponent that will be determined.  Game time will be 6:30.

>NOV. 3, 2008--  TOWNIES PUT OUT A BETTER EFFORT BUT LACK THE TOTAL EXECUTION TO BEAT LASALLE, 3-1 (21-25, 12-25, 25-22, 20-25).  EP came out a little slow and showed some opening game jitters.  The team settled down and began to play with some fire and had many solid plays.  Overall the Townies just made crucial mistakes at the wrong time in games one and four.  The team will learn from this match and look to improve for Wednesday night's match vs. Lincoln at home.

>NOV. 1 2008--  TOWNIES JV TEAM TAKES #1 SPOT AT THE NORTH DIVISIONALS.    EP finished pool play with an 11-1 record.  The Townies dropped their last game of the day as faulty serving prevented them from a perfect record.  The team will travel to North Kingstown HS on Saturday, November 8 for the JV State Championships.  First game is scheduled for 9:00.

>OCT. 30, 2008--  TOWNIES CLIP THE CLIPPERS 3-0.  EP traveled to Cumberland and served with great proficiency to lead the way to victory.  Senior setter Michelle Fleming had 6 aces.  EP will return to the court on Monday the 3rd against LaSalle.  This game is a rescheduled event.

>OCT. 24, 2008--  TOWNIES BEAT WOONSOCKET 3-0.  (25-12, 25-15. 25-9).  EP stepped on the court and played a smart, fundamental game.  Morganne Booker and Karissa Goad combined for 14 kills.  The team had 13 aces.  EP will return to the court on Tuesday at home vs. rival LaSalle.

>OCT. 20, 2008--  EP HANDLES BURRILLVILLE 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-9),  The Townies traveled to Bronco country and turned back Burrillville.  EP played inconsistently in game one and then brought it together for the final two games.  EP will return to the court on Friday at home vs. Woonsocket.

>OCT. 15, 2008--  TOWNIES UNLEASH THEIR POTENTIAL, BEAT CLASSICAL 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-13).  All season long the team has fought themselves and held themselves back from playing to their capabilities.  Tonight, the team let it all out.  Solid serving and passing led to a strong offensive attack, and timely blocking.  The team communicated extremely well and supported each other on every play.  Senior Stephanie Michalopoulos turned in a strong game with 12 kills, and 8 digs.  Liz Caruolo continued her solid play on the right side with 4 kills and numerous touches on hits.  Setters Michelle Fleming and Lauren Ghazal moved the ball around offensively and Jessica Amaral (6 aces) and Amanda Cabral passed the ball tremendously.  The middle duo of Karissa Goad and Morganne Booker combined for 7 kills and 4 blocks. Sophomore, Charlotte Newton played her best varsity match to date, with 5 kills, as well as putting up a strong block.  This is the type of volleyball that the team is capable of and must continue to work to sustain.  The team will return to action on Monday at Burrillville.

>OCT. 8, 2008--  EP TURNS BACK PONAGANSET 3-0. (25-13, 25-20, 25-13).  The Townies traveled out to the "country" and continued to improve the team's overall play and continuity.  The team was led by captain, Liz Caruolo's 5 kills and 3 blocks and 5 aces from junior libero, Jessica Amaral.  EP will play on Monday at CCRI/Lincoln in the annual Koch Eye Tournament.  The team will return to league play on Wednesday at Classical HS.

>OCT. 6, 2008--  TOWNIES TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS AGAINST CRANSTON EAST, 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-12).  EP came out with a business demeanor and went to work against the Thunder Bolts.  The team limited their errors in the service game and served tough with 15 aces.  Offensively the middle duo of Morganne Booker and Karissa Goad combined for 17 kills.  Defensively Torii Costa had a team high 10 digs.  The game also saw the return of senior captain Lauren Ghazal, who has been out for almost a month with a shoulder injury.

>OCT. 4, 2008--  TOWNIE JV TEAM LOSES IN 9TH/10TH TOURNAMENT FINAL TO MOUNT ST. CHARLES, 25-17.  In what turned out to be a marathon tournament, the Townie JV team turned in a great day of volleyball.  The team went 11-1 in pool play and earned the #1 seed in the playoffs.  EP beat Burrillville in the semis 25-21.  In the finals the Mounties jumped out to an early lead and hung on to earn the win and the 9th/10th title.  The Townies were led by sophomores Victoria Blaydes, and Charlotte Newton, as well as freshman Alex Amaral.  Sophomore Megan Andrade turned in a solid day from her libero position.

>OCT. 2, 2008--  EP TRAVELS TO COVENTRY AND GETS BEAT 3-0.  (20-25, 18-25, 17-25).  The Townies cannot find any consistent level of volleyball with the exception that they are consistently up and down.  Once again the team came up empty attacking with 28 kills and 28 errors.  Too many balls landed on the court with the team looking for someone else to take charge and make the play.  The team is fighting itself and must work to find its way.  EP will return to action on Monday against Cranston East at 6:30.

>SEPT. 29, 2008--   TOWNIES OVERCOME A ROUGH FIRST GAME, DEFEAT LINCOLN IN FOUR (24-26, 25-12, 25-10, 25-19).  EP couldn't get out of its own way in game 1. EP had the lead at 24-22 and proceeded to hit the next 4 balls out of bounds.  The Townies handed the Lions 20 points on service errors, hitting errors and blocking errors.  The team managed to turn things around quickly in the following games.  Somehow this team has to start faster and play smarter.  Stephanie Michalopoulos turned in a stellar performance with 13 kills and 6 digs.  Liz Caruolo and Morganne Booker combined for 21 kills and 4 blocks.  Michelle Fleming continued her solid play with 25 assists and 5 digs.  The team will return to action on Thursday night at Coventry.  Game times are 4:45 (JV) and 6:30 (Varsity).

SEPT. 25, 2008--  EP BEATS CUMBERLAND 3-0 (25-7, 25-13,25-8) The Townies handled the Clippers in three games.  The team bounced back from a sub-par performance Tuesday to earn the win.  The team will return to action on Monday at Lincoln.

SEPT. 23, 2008--  TOWNIES ARE HAMMERED BY LASALLE, SWEPT 3-0 ( 18-25. 8-25, 21-25).  EP was totally outplayed by the Rams in every facet of the game.  The Townies played timid, and with no passion or fire.  Once again the service and passing games were off.  The team had seven service errors to one ace, and 19 hitting errors.  EP finished with 15 kills to go with those 19 errors for a -.062 hitting percentage.   Many of those hitting errors were due to poor passing.  It has been a long time since an EP volleyball team was swept in a match.  The team needs to come up with some pride and determination if they are going to turn this around.

SEPT. 18, 2008--  TOWNIES TURN BACK WOONSOCKET 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-6)EP once again started slow, but regained form in the second and third games. Morganne Booker (10 kills) and  Stephanie Michalopoulos (8 kills)led the offense and Jessica Amaral had six aces and 6 digs.  The Townies return to the court on Tuesday night at rival LaSalle.  Game time is 6:30.

SEPT. 15, 2008--  EP HANDLES BURRILLVILLE 3-0 ( 25-16, 25-8, 25-7).  The Townies started slow and very lethargic, but rebounded to play solid volleyball in the second and third games.  Townie middles, Karissa Goad, and Morganne Booker combined for 13 kills and 8 blocks to lead the way.  Senior setter Michelle Fleming set the ball with confidence as she amassed 20 assists.  The Townies return to the court on Thursday night at Woonsocket.

SEPT. 11, 2008--  TOWNIES DROP MATCH TO CLASSICAL, 3-2 (15-25, 25-10, 19-25,  25-20, 11-15).  EP simply couldn't make the basic plays of volleyball to help themselves win the match.  The team had 18 service errors, 27 hitting errors, and 12 setting errors for a whopping total of 57 Classical points.  No team can make that many errors and expect to win a match.  Morganne Booker turned a solid performance in the middle as she had 7 kills and 4 blocks for the match.  Classical turned in a great defensive performance, and the Townies learned a lot from tonight's match.  The team will regroup and go back to work in preparation for next week's matches.

SEPT. 10, 2008--  TOWNIES TURN BACK CHIEFTAINS, 3-0 ( 25-18, 25-9, 25-16).  EP came out rather slow in game one, producing 14 unforced errors.  As a result Ponaganset was able to stay in game one.  The Townies executed better in games two and three to earn the win.  Amanda Cabral had 4 kills and 9 digs, and Jessica Amaral had 5 aces and 6 digs to pace the Townies.  EP will return to action tomorrow night at 6:30 vs. league rival, Classical.

SEPT. 5, 2008--  EP TRAVELS TO EAST GREENWICH AND TURNS IN A FLAT, SLOPPY PERFORMANCE, STILL PREVAILS, 3-1 (25-16, 25-10, 23-25, 25-18).  The Townies must have been feeling good about themselves after beating the Skippers on opening night.  The team came out and played effectively in the first two games, and then lost their focus and composure in the next two.  Thanks to a great game by senior outside hitter Stephanie Michalopoulos (11 kills, 10 digs, and 2 aces) the Townies pulled it together enough to get the win.  This team has a long way to go, and the seniors need to pick up their leadership.  The defense was sloppy, and the setting was erratic.  The Townies are now off until Sept, 10 at home vs. Ponaganset.

SEPT. 3, 2008--   TOWNIES OPEN SEASON WITH WIN AGAINST RIVAL NORTH KINGSTOWN, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-7).  EP had a tough opponent in the home opener.  The Townies stepped on the floor and played a solid, all-around team game to pick up the first win of the season.  The Townies were led by Senior Captain, Liz Caruolo's 8 kills and 4 blocks, Stephanie Michalopoulos' 6 kills and 3 digs, and setter Michelle Flemings 13 assists, 2 kills and 2 digs.  The team had solid passing and strong blocking to lead the way to victory.  The team will return to action on Friday night at East Greenwich.
