TOWNIES WIN SUPER BOWL - DIVISION I CHAMPIONS
On a cool day at Pierce Field yesterday, the Townies defeated Bishop Hendricken in the Rhode Island Division I Super Bowl by a score of 35-13. Five different players scored for East Providence, while the defense held the Hawks scoreless over the entire second half.

On the Townies' first possession of the game, Nate Lovett pitched the ball to half-back Andrew Boisvert, who in turn threw a fifty yard pass to Isaac Spivey. The play set up Lovett's 12-yard run that put the Townies on top 7-0.

In the second quarter, Lovett broke away for a forty-four yard carry, but fumbled at the Hawk goal line. However, Spivey was there to recover the fumble and scored. Continuing the Townie onslaught on the ground, Tom Speaks and Jared Awokande scored on 52- and 9- yard runs, respectively, in the second half. The win was sealed with defensive lineman Mike Payne's fumble recovery for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Kicker Ben Carter was perfect on the day, going 5-5 in PAT attempts.

The Townie defense effectively shut down the Hawks' running back Brad Sowah on some critical fourth down stands. For his defensive performance in the game, which included two sacks and several tackles, Cam Ford was awarded the MVP award.

The win marks the Townies' third state title in the last five years and the seventh under head coach, Sandy Gorham.

Townies head to Super Bowl against Hendricken
The first round of Rhode Island Division I Interscholastic League football playoffs were held yesterday on a cold night at Pierce Field, but the Townies did not let the temperatures stifle their potency.

In thrilling fashion, the football team defeated the North Kingstown Skippers by a score of 7-0. This marked the Townie defenses first shutout of the season, and the feat was certainly well-deserved, considering numerous stands on third and fourth downs that halted the Skipper offense.

Defense thwarts LaSalle offense on Thanksgiving; Townies are #1 playoff seed
It was cold, windy and rainy on Thanksgiving morning at Pierce Field as the Townies played the LaSalle Rams in the seventy-eighth installment of the EP-LaSalle Thanksgiving Rivalry. LaSalle now leads the series 42-34-2.

Despite the inclement weather, the Townie defense, led by the tenacity of lineman Dave Fish, kept the LaSalle running game at bay. The Townie defensive line was considerably outweighed by the LaSalle offensive line, but the Townies only gave up 119 yards to the Rams' running back, Matt Hansen.

Along with Fish, fellow linemen Jesse Blakely and Cam Ford proved to be the difference-makers in halting the LaSalle offense. Also, defensive tackle Brian Bland recorded two blocked punts. The latter was recovered by Blakely and returned for a touchdown.

On offense, the slippery ball and bad conditions made substantial drives difficult for both squads. Quarterback Nate Lovett did connect with Jared Awokande on two passes for 32 yards. In the second quarter, he also threw for a 5-yard touchdown to Isaac Spivey.

The win puts the Townies' regular season league record at 7-1, and as a result, they finish the season as a co-division champion with the Rams. However, the Townies are seeded first in the RI Interscholastic League Division I playoffs, which commence this Tuesday. The Townies will host North Kingstown at Pierce at 6:00. The Townies were victorious in their first meeting this season, 24-10.

Victory over Cranston West secures second place in Division I
The Townies posted a solid victory over Cranston West last night at Cranston Stadium by a score of 28-6. On the legs of Corey Blair, running for injured fullback Tom Speaks, the Townies put up 21 points in the first half. Blair ran for 232 yards on 22 carries, averaging 10.5 yards a carry.

Three of the Townie touchdowns came on runs by Blair, while Jared Awokande scored the fourth TD on after recovering a fumble near the goal line and running for the score. Quarterback Nate Lovett threw for 45 yards and ran for 33 yards on the night. In extra-point attempts, Ben Carter was perfect, going four for four.

The Townie defense stymied the Falcons all night led by the tenacity of Cam Ford and Jesse Blakely. Ron Woodley chipped in with two interceptions and Kyle Markarian had one.

The Townies improve their league record to 6-1 with the win and now are the sole owners of second place, behind undefeated LaSalle (at 7-0). The Townies square off against the Rams on Thanksgiving Day at Pierce Field for the the Division I crown and the top seed in the play-offs.

Despite cold, wind, sloppy play, Townies top St. Ray's
On a cold night at Pariseau Field in Pawtucket, last night, the Townies toppled St. Raphael Academy by a score of 14-6. With the win, the Townies improve to 7-1.

Fullback Tom Speaks led the offense with 52 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. Speaks' score was set up by a 50-yard breakaway run by quarterback Nate Lovett. Lovett finished the game with 61 yards on nine carries.

In the fourth quarter, fullback Corey Blair added insurance with a seven yard TD run, and Ben Carter booted the second of his two good extra point attempts.

Townies dominate in 2006 Homecoming Game
Playing in a postponed game due to inclement weather, Saturday, the Townies came out in force and defeated North Kingston by a score of 24-10 in EPHS's 2006 Homecoming Game.

Although the performance was marred by three fumbles in their own territory, the Townies clinched a play-off spot with the win. Quarterback Nate Lovett scored in the first quarter on a 72-yard touchdown run, and the Townies kept the lead for the remainder of the ballgame.

The Townie defense played a large hand in subduing the potent North Kingston offense, particularly on a stand in which the Skippers took over at the Townie 18 yard line. The defense held NK to only seven yards on four plays, which led to the offense taking over on downs.

The Townie offense closed out the second quarter with a 79-yard drive, and kicker Ben Carter capped the effort with a 17-yard field goal. In the third quarter, another long drive put the Townies on the NK 9-yard line, and Tom Speaks rushed for the TD. Lovett hit Spivey in the end zone for the two point conversion. Speaks sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with a 1-yd TD run.

The Townies square off against St. Ray's on Saturday, next week, at Pariseau Field in Pawtucket at 1:00.

The win lifts the Townies of East Providence to 3-1 in Division I play. The solid defense, anchored by Dan Waters and Cam Ford, held Portsmouth scoreless for three quarters. Clutch field goal by Carter propels Townies to victory
With only seconds left on the clock on a cool Friday night at Pierce Field, Ben Carter kicked a field goal to put the Townies ahead for good, 9-7 in a close game with Rogers. The Townies scored in the the first quarter on a thirty two yard run by Tom Speaks. Rogers blocked the extra point, leaving the Townies a lead of six. The next two quarters were an offensive stalemate, as both defenses halted both the passing and running games on both ends. The only Rogers touchdown came in the third quarter, but a sound drive lead by quarterback Nate Lovett to put the Townies in field goal position sealed the game. The Townies play the Eagles next week at Barrington and look to improve to 3-1.
