Townies finish 15th; Barao is
First Team All-State
Capping off a stellar career of Rhode Island
cross-country running, Nick Barao (16:17) finished fifth at the Rhode
Island State Cross-Country Championships, today. Only six seconds
separated the second place finisher and Barao, with third and fourth
sandwiched in between. With the finish, Barao qualifies for first team
All-State honors and a trip to the New England Championship which will
also be held at Ponaganset next week.
The
Townies' second man, Ryan Sullivan (17:33) finished in thirty-sixth
place, nearly making a bid for an appearance at New Englands. Taking
fifty seconds off his time from last week, Alex Browning (18:50) took
110th place. Kyle Towne (19:02) and John Butler (19:31) rounded out
the scorers for EP.
In total, the Townie-harriers finished with 345
points, and a fifteenth place finish. In recognition of Coach
Hoppman's last RI high school meet, the team presented its retiring
coach with a "Hopp Lives" t-shirt, and wished him well in all future
endeavors. Congratulations to Coach Hoppman on successfully
resurrecting the Townie-harriers in only four years.
Barao will run next Saturday at 11:30 at Ponaganset
representing the Townies for the second consecutive year. Best of luck
to Nick for solid race.

Barao cruises to
second as Townies take ninth at Class Meet
Nick Barao (16:31) made an emphatic
statement Saturday, at Ponaganset High School by taking second in the
Class A Championship Meet. In a field of almost ninety runners, Barao
spent much of the race in seventh place, but worked the final mile and
came within seven seconds of the winner. With the impressive finish,
Barao gains all-class honors, along with Ryan Sullivan (17:52), who
took thirteenth. Alex Browning (19:40) finished in sixty-fifth place.
With Kyle Towne and Tim St. Pierre not
running this week, the remaining scorers' times were not
representative of the true Townie lineup. However, John Butler (20:00)
and Charlie Wescott (20:29) finished in seventieth and seventy-second,
respectively.
With 219 points, the Townies finished in ninth place
in Class A, an impressive mark compared to just four years ago, when
the Townie-harriers placed at the bottom of Class A. Having already
qualified for the State Championship meet, also held at Ponaganset,
the Townies will be back next Sunday, when Barao and Sullivan look to
also merit all-state honors.

Townies qualify for states; drop two of three in final regular season
meet
The Townies squared off against LaSalle, Barrington and Mt. Hope,
three of the premier teams of the Rhode Island cross-country circuit.
The Townies beat out Mt. Hope by a narrow margin of 27-28, thanks in
large part to the hard work of Ryan Sullivan (17:19) with one mile
left in the race. Sullivan captured ninth place behind Nick Barao
(16:00), who finished first for the Townies, in second place overall.
LaSalle and Barrington, two teams with a great deal of depth, beat the
Townies by scores of 21-40 and 23-38, respectively. Kyle Towne (18:12)
finished third for the Townies, and Alex Browning (18:29) and Tim St.
Pierre (19:06) rounded out the scorers. Going 1-2 on the day, the
Townies finish the regular season with a 7-2 record, which is good for
third place in the Metro Division. As a result, the Townies qualify
for the Rhode Island State Championship Meet in November, where Barao
will look to earn a repeat trip to the New England Championship.

Sixth straight win keeps Townies undefeated
On a fine day for running at Slater Park, the Townies defeated
division foes Classical and St. Ray's by scores of 19-38 and 15-50,
respectively. The standard 1-2-3 finishers, Nick Barao (15:31), Ryan
Sullivan (17:04), and Alex Browning (17:19) anchored the team, while
Kyle Towne (17:54) and Tim St. Pierre (18:26) rounded out the scorers.
The length of the course has been the issue of some debate, especially
regarding one unmarked area. Based on comparisons to the last meet at
Slater, the course was probably about 2.9 miles. The Townies (6-0)
head into next week's last regular season meet against LaSalle,
Barrington and Mount Hope with the division title on the line.
